Question # 1 Does your contractor have workman’s compensation insurance and liability insurance? Does he require this from each of his subcontractors?
A yes answer to these questions is vital to your protection in case of accidents on your property during a remodeling project. If the contractor doesn’t have this insurance you could be liable for these accidents. When you are going to do a remodeling project it is always wise to check with your insurance agent. He can inform you of your responsibilities.

Question # 2 Has your contractor done a project of this magnitude and degree of difficulty of your proposed project? Was the client satisfied with the contractor’s performance?

Many contractors can do simple projects but can they do a project as detailed as yours. Do they have the skilled professionals that can handle all the many details and scheduling difficulties involved with a complicated remodeling project? Will they have the materials when needed and the manpower at the proper stages of

  1. Does your contractor have workman’s compensation insurance and liability insurance? Does he require this from each of his subcontractors?
  2. Has your contractor done a project of this magnitude and degree of difficulty of your proposed project? Was the client satisfied with the contractor’s performance?
  3. Does your contractor have his own employees or does he subcontract all his work? Does he make sure the subcontractors who work on your home are people you can trust?
  4. Does your contractor have an office and a daytime phone number where they can be contacted?  Will he provide the vital ongoing communication, which is required to complete a project in a responsible manner?
  5. Does your contractor have qualified sub contractors or does he just get those who will work for the lowest price?
  6. Does your contractor provide a contract which details what is and isn’t included? Are his specifications clear and complete?  Do you know the payment schedule and will additional work be priced quickly?
  7. Will your contractor clean the job site daily and respect your home, family and pets?
  8. Will your contractor be there for you when the project is complete?
  9. Will your contractor provide you with custom design and 3D cad drawings to help you discover what your different options will look like and how they will compare in price while you are creating your design?  Will your contractor really listen to you and incorporate your desires into the finished project?
